Celebrating Regional Enterprise with the MidlandsIreland.ie Best in Business Awards 2012.

The event was held in the Hodson Bay Hotel, Athlone on Thursday 21st June and attended by 300 business people.  Guests were welcomed by a drinks reception, sponsored by Irish Distillers, and exhibitors gave the guests a ‘taste of the Midlands’ with food from Rossmore Ice Cream, Co. Laois, Mossfield Organic Farm Handmade Irish Cheese, Co. Offaly, Kyles Kitchen, Co. Longford and Kilbeggan Whiskey, Co. Westmeath.   President of the Midlands Gateway Chamber, Mr. Ray Byrne spoke about the important work of the Midlands Gateway Chamber and the formulation of the new brand for the Midlands, which was completed in partnership with the Midlands Regional Authority with the launch of ‘MidlandsIreland.ie’, the new brand for the region. Ray continued to say, ‘The six regional chambers; Midlands Gateway Chamber, Athlone Chamber, Tullamore Chamber, Mullingar Chamber, Longford Chamber and Laois Chamber have worked together to bring you this event where innovation and excellence is recognised across all business sectors in the Midlands.’ Mr. John McGrath, President Athlone Chamber, welcomed guests to Athlone. The Cathaoirleach of Midlands Regional Authority, Mr. Mícheál Carrigy addressed the audience saying,  ‘The Midlands is a great location for business with unparalleled national connectivity, with Dublin International Airport only a little over an hour’s drive from any part of the region offering direct access to European Markets of 800 million people, an established precedent in serving world markets, a strong tradition as a centre of learning excellence with access to a highly qualified workforce in a diverse range of disciplines, advanced telecommunications and energy networks and significant business and development support agencies.’ He continued to say,  ‘Tonight we are here to celebrate both the emerging and established businesses of our region across many sectors and I congratulate those businesses and wish them continued success and thank them for the encouragement they offer to those who may be thinking of starting a business in the Midlands. Following this the awards ceremony got under way with Mr. Will Faulkner, Midlands Radio as Master of Ceremonies. The first award was the Emerging New Business Award, kindly sponsored by AIB. Ms Joanne O’Connor, AIB Branch Manager Athlone, representing AIB Midlands presented the award to the winners Applied Concepts based in Co.Offaly, the other finalists in this category were Slipstream EDI and The Marketing Department. The next award of the evening was Best Multi-National Business Award, kindly sponsored by the IDA. Mr. Frank Conlon, IDA Midlands Regional Manager presented the award to Abbott Diagnostics, based in Co. Longford and the other finalist in this category was Covidien. The Best Cultural Tourism Award, kindly sponsored by Lakelands & Inland Waterways was next with Mr. Eanna Rowe, Head of Marketing and Communications, Waterways Ireland, presenting the award to the winners, Tullamore Show, based in Offaly.  The other finalists in this category were Core Crafted Design and Lough Bishop House. The winners of the Green Initiative Award, kindly sponsored by Bord na Mona were CJ Sheeran, the award was presented by Mr. Paddy Rowland, Bord na Mona’s Corporate Communications Manager.  The other finalists in this category were Lough Bishop House and Polar Ice Tech Ltd. The Retail Excellence Award, kindly sponsored by ManageRent Ltd Budapest, was presented to the winners Galvin for Men Tullamore by Mr. Patrick Davitt, Founder and Managing Director of ManageRent Ltd and Mr. Aidan Davitt Managing Director Sherry FitzGerald Davitt & Davitt Auctioneers, Mullingar. The other finalists in this category were Red Earth and Clelands. The Outstanding Business Award, kindly sponsored by EirGrid, was next with Mr. Neil Keegan, EirGrid Project Manager, presenting the award to the winners Glenisk, based in Offaly.  The other finalists in this category were MOHH and Cuisine Royale. The final business award was the Business Person of the Year Award, kindly sponsored by CPL. Mr. Graham Burns, Director CPL Regional Office, presented the award to the winner Ms. Regina Bushell, Grovelands Childcare. The other finalists were Mr. Berty Dunne, Annebrook House Hotel and Mr. Ronan O’Brien, Zatori. The Life Time Achievement Award was kindly sponsored by the Hodson Bay Hotel and Ms. Michelle Peake, Sales and Marketing Manager for the hotel presented the award to the winners; a couple who’s versatility, self belief, professionalism and relentless pursuit of success is an example to all budding entrepreneurs, Jim and Nancy Denby. Jim Denby spoke about his success in business throughout his life stating that it is important to ‘concentrate on quality to ensure repeat business.’ The Midlands Ambassador of the Year award was kindly sponsored by MidlandsIreland.ie gateway to growth. The winner of the award, Professor Ciarán O’Catháin, unfortunaltely couldn’t be there in person to accept the award because he was in Malaysia promoting Athlone Institute of Technology and the Midlands Region.  Ciarán recorded a message of thanks for bestowing such an honorable award on him. Cathaoirleach of Midlands Regional Authority, Mr. Mícheál Carrigy presented the award to the Professor’s wife, Sandra and son, Lorcan. Mr. Ray Byrne thanked in particular the sponsors of the event for their generous support, Celtic Roots for the beautiful award pieces, Bernard Coyle for his Audio Visual work, and Mr. Will Faulkner for coming on board as MC. Athlone Town Centre, Shopping Centre conducted a questionairre compeition for the audience and the winner, Mr. Joe O’Brien, Tullamore Court Hotel, received a €250 voucher to spend in any of the retail outlets in the shopping centre.   Next years Business Awards event will take place in Tullamore, Co.Offaly [Not a valid template]  
The MidlandsIreland.ie Best in Business Awards is in its second year and this year it is bigger and better with the inclusion of more awards attracting entrants from the four counties of the Midlands, i.e. Offaly, Longford, Westmeath and Laois.

Midlands Gateway Chamber launched the MidlandsIreland.ie Best in Business Awards on Wednesday 21st March at the Hodson Bay Hotel, Athlone, County Westmeath. The president of the Midlands Gateway Chamber, Mr. Ray Byrne, said, “The competition is now in its second year and we have made this years competition bigger and better.  Two new award categories have been added and we are working with the chambers from the entire Midland region, Athlone Chamber, Tullamore Chamber, Mullingar Chamber, Longford Chamber and Laois Chamber to recognise the best in all business sectors”. Midlands Regional Authority Cathaoirleach Mícheál Carrigy, Mr. Martin Daly, Director of the Midland Regional Authority and Presidents of five chambers from the Midlands region were present.  Tullamore Chamber President, Mr. Joe O’Brien, who could not attend the launch, said, “Tullamore Chamber is delighted to be working with the other chambers in the region and to be involved with this prestigious competition.” The competition is now open, visit www.midlandsireland.ie to download nomination forms.
