Government Needs to Take Measures Now to Support Business

Chambers Ireland has today (28/04/11) said that the decrease in the volume of retail sales in March shows that action is needed now to support the retail sector. Ian Talbot, Chambers Ireland Chief Executive said, "As retail sales continue to drop, Government and Local Authorities must work to support the Enterprise sector proactively as consumers adapt to their new post-USC reduced incomes. The 13.9 % decline in Furniture and Lighting alone shows the lack of market activity in housing. We need urgent action now to deliver a National Property Price Register as promised for 2011 to inform the market on true house prices and in turn deliver more normal levels of activity for everyone's benefit." "Furthermore, we need significant cost containment measures across all arms of Government to be implemented and for the savings arising to be passed on to the Business Sector. We need a sense of urgency and action that is focussed on execution of significant change, not prevarication, by public sector institutions," he concluded.
